While it is still important to cleanse surfaces, scientists believe the coronavirus is borne through air and can infect people when inhaled making air quality the greatest factor in the risk of infection.
Air Purification on Bus and Trains will give passengers the confidence to return to public transportation.
Key Attributes:
- The germicidal ultraviolet irradiation (UVC) light air sterilizer quickly mounts in existing ventilation systems on bus or train to kill viruses, bacteria, mold and other living airborne pathogens.
- Kills 99.9% of germs in the air.
- Purified Air decals can be posted to advise passengers that the air is clean.
Why Air Purification versus MERV-13 Filters.
Many operators have taken steps to install higher-rated filters that capture smaller particles (the diameter of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has been found to range between 50 nm to 140 nm MERV rating of 13 means the filter is 90% to 98% minimum efficient at capturing particles, sized 30-100 nm), but they are not as effective against COVID-19 for air quality. Further, swapping out one MERV 8 filter for a MERV 13 is a complex proposition.
ISSUE USING MERV-13 FILTERS
- SUPPLY: there is a limited supply of filters available. Identifying higher-numbered filters that fit, work well, and are EPA-approved is difficult.
- MAINTENANCE: There are also maintenance issues. Often, installing higher-number filters would void the warranties on the ventilation systems because pushing air through denser filtration elements risks overheating and overexerting the fans and motors.
- OVERALL EFFICIENCY: Upgrading filters could also have an adverse effect on air handling as a whole. The higher the filter number, the faster it gets dirty, reducing the overall efficiency of the entire ventilation system.
